THE Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra’s Instrument Petting Zoo continues with its live online program with featured tuba player Benedicto dela Peret, Jr. on Sunday, August 23, at 4pm via the PPO Facebook page.

Benedicto will talk about the tuba and demonstrate how it is played in the instrument petting zoo session.  He will also perform classical pieces suited for the said instrument.

Jun, as he is popularly called, began playing the tuba at the age of 13 with the Cabiao Youth Concert Band 88 in Cabiao, Nueva Ecija.  He studied at the University of the Philippines College of Music where he earned a Bachelor of Music, major in Tuba, and Master of Music, major in Music Performance at the Philippine Women`s University.  He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Music Performance at the same school.  


Benedicto is an active band and orchestral musician who started as tubist with the Philippine Youth Orchestra and the Manila Youth Symphony Orchestra.  Some of his experiences as tubist are with the ASEAN Youth Music Workshop held in Bangkok, Thailand in 1996, the UP Chamber Orchestra, Crosswave Symphony Orchestra Project, The Bamboo Organ Festival Orchestra and as substitute tubist of the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra.  He also played bass trombone and tuba during the Miss Saigon production in Manila.  In 2003, he was invited together with other six Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) principals to perform with the ASEAN-Japan Symphony Orchestra, a selection of Asia`s principal orchestra players held in Tokyo, Japan.  He toured in major European cities like Madrid, Prague and Klagenfurt in 2001 with the PPO.  He also performed with the PPO in Asia Orchestra Week in Tokyo, Japan in 2002, A Magical Bright of Music – National Theater, Bangkok, Thailand in 2004, World Exposition 2005 in Nagoya, Japan, World Exposition 2010 in Shanghai, China, National Center for Performing Arts in Beijing, China in 2011, Hong Kong Jockey Club Amphitheatre and at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2016.  The PPO was invited once again to perform in Asia Orchestra Week 2018 held in Kuji and Tokyo, Japan.  In 2012, he performed with the Philbanda Wind Orchestra for the Asia-Pacific Band Director`s Association Conference held in Singapore.  He played with the Bulacan Wind Orchestra in Tao Yuan International Band Festival 2014 in Taiwan.  As a chamber musician, he is a founding member of the UP Junior Brass Quintet, UP Oblation Brass Quintet, Manila Tuba Euphonium Quartet and The Pinoy Brass.  He also founded the UP Brass Ensemble, UP Tuba Euphonium Ensemble, The Brasses-Sion and The Euphonic Swingers, where he plays trombone and bass guitar.


Benedicto is a member of the International Tuba Euphonium Association and also an active clinician of bands, brass ensembles and juror of different music competitions in the country.  He is currently a faculty member at the University of the Philippines College of Music, and Philippine Women`s University School of Music. He is the Principal Tubist of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra.


A project of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, the instrument petting zoo aims to promote appreciation for musical instruments of the orchestra and its music among children and families.  It is held every Sunday at 4pm, and runs for several months.
